SHARE's Child Disability Center At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

SHARE's Child Disability Center is the cornerstone of the new Medical Genetics Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It provides expert diagnosis treatment and prevention of all forms of developmental disability. Geneticists, pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, ophthalmologists, surgeons, and many other specialists form a team to care for children with complex disorders. Patients are evaluated to determine the cause of their developmental disability, genetic counseling concerning the chance of the condition recurring within the family is provided and appropriate treatment is coordinated. The center is the western United States base for the testing and provision of the new enzyme therapies for storage diseases that produce severe mental retardation. Excellent clinical laboratories in cytogenetics and molecular genetics support the clinical center. In addition, the center is engaged in research into the causes of various forms of mental retardation, such as Down Syndrome and other chromosomal diseases, Williams syndrome, metabolic errors and structural defects of the brain. In addition, the Center is involved in collaborative research with the scientists throughout the world to determine the genetic or environmental causes of these many disorders. Families are also offered the opportunity of taking part in these research programs if the so desire.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a not for profit community hospital and academic research and teaching center affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine. The Medical Genetics Institute is a world- renowned center for clinical care, teaching and research. SHARE's Child Disability Center faculty have edited two of the major textbooks and reference works in medical genetics and founded the American Board of Medical Genetics and the American College of Medical Genetics.
